Category Archives: This is Monica’s side of the story.

And there ya have it.

Well, I can officially say, it’s over. We’re home. And for those who only follow this blog, I apologize for the severe lack of updates the last several weeks. We spent the last month or so staying incredibly busy. The last post was from Brittany back in January… so what happened in February?! I know all you adoring fans are just DYING to know! 😉

Well, February started off with a little adventure in Beijing! Yes, we finally got to go! We saw the Great Wall, we went skiing, we went to the Summer Palace, we ate  Cold Stone, we got massages, and we went ice skating on a frozen lake! It’s safe to say the trip was a grand success!

Let’s start with the Great Wall of China… I can’t even! Like on a sale of 1 to Even… I can’t! It’s absolutely beautiful. It’s majestic. It’s everything you see in the movies, but when you’re standing at the base of those stairs, there are no words. You look straight up and think, “Wow.” It’s just plain awesome! If it’s not on your bucket list to see the Great Wall, I beg of you, add it to the list! But be prepared.

There’s apparently two ways to go up: one via trolly ($) and another via your own two feet (or in Bieber’s case, your two body guards’ four feet). And lemme tell you something, those stairs are completely vertical! You could actually climb up on your hands and feet like you were climbing a rock wall. So, wear good shoes so you can laugh at all the women climbing down backwards in their heels! It’ll be fun, trust me!

We took a lot of good pictures together and two good pictures with random kids. Poor them, their mother insisted that they take a picture with us. And at this point, being asked for a picture had become so normal for me and Brittany that we just agreed without a second thought. There’s probably around 100  pictures out there online that we don’t know about, which would include pictures that people have asked for and those that people have not asked for.

Later that day, we managed to scare the poo out of a little kid. No really, we did…

So we were walking across a large, paved… area… heading toward “The Nest” where the 2008 Olympics were held. (By the way, it’s huge.) As we walked along we came up behind a man with his two young sons. As kids do, one of them was walking kinda funny, twisting his body, swinging his legs and playing with the hood on his jacket. As he twisted his body to the right, he saw us. Then as he turned away, he realized what he had just seen… two white girls. He turned back to us for further confirmation and actually GASPED! It was like he had just seen an Autobot or something. He was blown away and quickly informed his brother and father of the mutants walking behind them! It was definitely a highlight of the trip, very entertaining. I thought Chris was going to pass out from lack of oxygen because he was laughing so hard.

We ended the day with foot massages which were glorious! So relaxing. One thing I’ll say in favor of living in China… spas. Nuf said.

Moving on to the Summer Palace: when we asked Chris which would be better, Summer Palace or Forbidden City, he highly recommended the Summer Palace. And I am so glad he did! Ancient Chinese architecture is so detailed and so magnificent that you find yourself taking pictures of everything, including the ground! There’s paintings everywhere, gold accents, tile work that looks like it drew blood from the fingers of the workers. It’s so intricate in the doors, the crossbeams, the floor, the frames and the bridges! I wanted to touch everything… I felt like a child! The whole place is built around a lake, which at the time of our visit was frozen. We were able to walk out on the ice and see the fish underneath. Then we had the unfortunate pleasure of seeing OLD men swimming in the freezing water. And when I say, “swimming” I mean skinny dipping. Sorry for the mental image, but if I had to see the real thing, you have to imagine it. Sorry to ya.

The temple they built there is gargantuan! And the statue inside could be described likewise. I must say it is also absolutely beautiful. I may not practice or agree with this religion but there’s no denying the attention and  beauty they put into their places of worship. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

mmexport1423062725358 mmexport1423052812383 IMG_20150204_145456 IMG_20150204_144831_1423043515618

I think it took us about four hours to walk around the whole place. It was very cold but absolutely worth it! The sun was setting as we were about to leave which allowed us to get some gorgeous shots!

mmexport1423065687006 mmexport1423065664906 IMG_20150204_161716 IMG_20150204_160957 IMG_20150204_160623 mmexport1423065405385 mmexport1423065286885 mmexport1423065255373 mmexport1423065232732 mmexport1423065191849 IMG_20150204_143536_1423043732822 mmexport1423065173930 IMG_20150204_135712 IMG_20150204_135617

All-in-all, our trip to Beijing was everything we hoped it would be and more! It was so nice to see Chris and to physically touch all these amazing things we had only seen in movies and pictures! We can actually say, “I have been to the Great Wall!” How cool is that?!

After our Beijing trip it was back to reality for about two weeks. With our surprise return coming up we had lots to pack, lots to plan, and lots to send home. On top of that, we had to say goodbye. Too many times. I know for me personally, it was rough. I had to say goodbye to different people at different times which provoked tears on several occasions rather than all at once! I don’t like to cry and until I moved to China, I didn’t cry nearly that much. Not due to insensitivity but rather due to the fact that I never had to say goodbye! I hate goodbyes. But such is life, right? Three coworkers on this day (cry), one friend on that day (cry), two coworkers on another day (cry) and two more friends on this day (curses… CRY AGAIN)! UGH. But I survived. And on that note I want to say something. The friends I made in China will be my friends for life. If any of you guys read this, I want you to know that you are a huge part of why I was able to leave China with my sanity. I would have lost it without you all! Love you guys!!

On our last week we were able to visit more friends, Caleb and Rochelle Zhang, in Zhuhai. Zhuhai is a beautiful city down on the southern coast and neighboring Macao. On this visit, we were able to take Rochelle out for some much-needed girl time!! It was a nice, relaxing way to end an adventurous year abroad. Furthermore, we were able to help them out by giving them our mattresses and table and chairs! We were going to have to donate them anyway, so why not give them to people we know and love, right?? It was such an awesome trip. Their daughter still melt my heart. She’s so beautiful and always happy and says “please” in Sign Language! I can’t wait to see them again and I hope they can come see us in California!!

Well, that about sums up our last month in China! To all who prayed for us and helped us along they way, I would like to say THANK YOU!!! We could tell the whole time that God was guiding and directing! He helped us to not just survive, but to thrive in those moments when we thought we were going to lose our minds and start talking to the trees or something. It was an adventure that I will never forget and will never regret! Our eyes were opened to they ways of another culture that, again, we’ve only heard about through Hollywood really. Until you take the chance and go to these places for yourself, you’ll never really understand what it’s like. I can write and write and write all day about the styles and the food and the relationships between mothers and their children, but honestly, it’s something that can only be understood when you SEE it.

Living oversees might not be suitable for everyone, but I believe to my core that travel is a great idea for everyone. The plan is to continue traveling! I don’t know if I’d do a whole year again, but I would love to go to more places in Asia and Europe and Africa. Anywhere I can find the opportunity. For starters, we plan to meet up with Casaundra and Tianne in New Zealand in two years! Lord-willing we’ll all the the money and the time off for such a trip.

It has been said… “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Lao Tzu (老子)  Here’s to taking that step!

Peace.

謝謝

… I did 2.

I’ll be honest, not much has happened since Christmas, aside from our last trip to Hong Kong. It was our only HK trip to be made in one day. And what a rush it was. We didn’t arrive in HK until 12:30 pm… and if you know anything about going there from Guangzhou, you know that’s a foolish thing to attempt. We decided we would go to the Hong Kong Observation Wheel which is a giant ferris wheel, 60 meters high, i believe. It took three hours after arriving at the train station, to finish our ride. Our train leaves at 6:44…. it’s 3:30 and we still have to take the mid-level escalator up to the place at which we want to eat, order our food, wait for our food, eat our food, ride the escalator back down, take the ferry across the harbor, get to the metro, and take it back to the train station in time to check in before the train leaves. Challenge: accepted. And mission: accomplished! BOOM.
A quick trip but well worth it!

This month will be a busy and emotional one to be sure. At Gymboree, we’re down two instructors whcih means a huge revamp of the schedule. One of those instructors is a very close friend, Julie. She will be moving to Boston, Massachusetts at the end of this month. I won’t lie, I’m sad. But i am very excited to plan a trip to see her in her new home and can’t wait to see how she likes living in America! I’ve been able to give her tips and advice on manners and what to expect and where she needs to eat! I hope she will have a wonderful experience there and that she’ll come to love America as much as i do!

Naturally, with one of our own spreading her wings, we had to have a farewell party! We had so much food, like an unholy amount of food! But that’s what happens when you get a bunch of females together for a party!

After eating till we just couldn’t take anymore, we went out to the track! Once again the need for speed took control of me and i flew through that track! Stalled a few times due to three-car pile-ups caused by my lovely coworkers. Any time the carts come to a full stop, they stall. Really cut into my time… i probably could have done another lap in the time i spent waiting for help. Julie had a blast once again and was much more comfortable as this was her third time to race! I’m so proud of her! She’ll be a great driver, yet! Janice stayed to the side to take pictures and short videos for wechat and they turned out great! It was a great time to spend with friends and do something Julie really enjoyed!

As we walked out of the stadium, we were comparing our experiences, including the number of laps we did. I did seven, others did six, some even did five. It was their first time, so that’s still impressive. Then we came to Bella who simply said, “I did 2.”

Good times
Peace!

…and it’s December 1st

Been a few weeks, I know… but better late than never I suppose.

So first: we invented a new holiday. It’s called Do Nothing Monday. Self-explanatory really, but allow me to explain how it works. Monday comes, what? Once a week? Few times a month? Well, every so often you plan a Do Nothing Monday. Then that Monday comes… and you do nothing. The end.

You stay in bed, you wear your PJs, you watch about four movies, you call the Chinese Pizza Hut and struggle to order two large pizzas for two not large girls, you take a nap, the pizzas arrive, you eat four slices each, you watch another movie, you put the left-over pizza in the fridge, and you go to bed.

Voila: Do Nothing Monday. It was a grand success and there’s talk of making it a permanent, “whenever-you-feel-like-you-need-it” holiday. I’d say the odds are in our favor of it passing with a unanimous vote. It’s highly recommended for the stressed-out, the homesick and the sick-sick.

You’re welcome.

Next: THANKSGIVING!

It was a huge SUCCESS!!! We had turkey, we had gravy, we had stuffing, we had corn and we had bread! It was glorious! I cried. I’m not ashamed to admit that I cried.. just a little. It was so nice to make a holiday memory of our own. Sure, we’d rather be with family at this time, but it was nice to have Thanksgiving in our home, at our table, purchased with our hard-earned money, and with our American friend Reese! He carved the turkey and prayed for the meal, and we ate like royalty. It was such a satisfying meal, if for no other reason than that it was a traditional American meal. I can’t adequately describe how thankful we all were to be able to have this kind of experience here. We had no idea it would even be possible, and wouldn’t ya know it? God came through again in ways we never even thought to ask…

After the deliciousest meal ever, we played the classic Christmas move Elf, and proceeded to decorate our little apartment with our little Christmas bush (cuz, child, t’ain’t no room for no real tree up in hurr) and stockings among other little things. (the stockings are regular size… everything else is little) The whole day was just perfect. We had great food with excellent company and lots of fun!

In precisely 62 days, we’ll be flying to Beijing!! Wow!! Can’t believe it’s only two months away!! Can’t wait to go to the Great Wall!! It’s gonna be snowing, most likely! How cool will that be??? A very unique experience and very unique pictures. I haven’t seen any pictures of the Wall with snow all around. That will be pretty cool! Plus, I’ll be able to see my buddy Chris!! YAY!! This is going to be so fun and soooo cold! Like I’m-gonna-have-to-buy-a-big-jacket-just-for-this-trip cold. Guangzhou is a much warmer place than Beijing. Seriously, it got cold… today

…and it’s December 1st.

PEACE.

We Shall Give Thanks!

It’s happening!!! Thanksgiving will be celebrated in China!! We’re so excited!

A few weeks ago things were looking grim in regards to Thanksgiving plans. As it is celebrated on Thursday, i thought all hope was lost because only Brittany has Thursdays off. But… i have awesome coworkers. Have i mentioned that before? Cuz i do! Sunny has agreed to trade days with me that week, so i can celebrate a holiday they’ve never heard of and which means nothing to them but which means the world to me. So here’s the plan… or here’s how the plan started…

Brittany and i would cook a feast as big as one can cook with two stove burners and no oven. Then we would transport said feast to Reese’s school on his lunch break. If you recall, Reese is our friend from Georgia who also misses Thanksgiving celebrations. And the three of us would feast on the feast we prepared on the stove!! VOILA! We could make this happen to the best of our ability! Ha Ha!!
But then something amazing happened. And I can only describe the circumstances surrounding this discovery as God-ordained…

After a somewhat long and stressful day, Brittany and i decided to go out last night to a place called McCawley’s Pub and Grill (where, naturally, we ordered Mexican food, but that’s beside the point). What we saw at McCawley’s changed our plans… our expectations for Thanksgiving. What we saw was an advertisement. This advertisement was for a special, happening at a place called The Butcher Shop. This special offers an American-imported Thanksgiving turkey with stuffing and dressing included! 80/kg plus 150 cooking fee. Mannah from Heaven. It will most assuredly be an expensive meal BUT… you just can’t put a price on Thanksgiving. There are no words for the emotions that flooded my soul when i saw this.

We have been through it, my friends! I’ll not rehash any of the stresses that have entered our lives in recent days… you can read about them in other posts. But there’s times like this when God just drops a turkey in our laps and we can’t help but smile and say, “Thank you!!”

“It’s the character that’s the strongest, that God gives the most challenges to.” Not sure about that, but I’m sure He’s doing something great here!

PEACE

Why Did I Say That…?

So on Monday… i had another first-time experience… KTV, which, for those of you who don’t know, is Karaoke. Yep. I went to karaoke with my coworkers… why? Oh, yes, I remember: because i told them i would try anything once. That was a mistake. (Word to the wise: don’t move to a new country/culture and tell your new friends that you’ll try anything once! You’ll end up eating jellyfish and singing karaoke.)
So there i was, facing three hours of singing. *insert panick attack here.* I told them I’d prefer to watch while they sang and would join later if i so chose. You know how they interpreted that? “Pick ‘Let It Go!’ Monica, sing!”
Huh? Sing? What? Why? Help! Thankfully, my good friend Chris sang with me so i could quietly mumble the words along with him. Honeslty, it really was a lot of fun! I’ve said this before: i have awesome coworkers and i just love them!

(Aaaannnd… one of them gets to move to America!!! Yay for Julie! Looks like I’ll be visiting Boston soon!)

Can’t wait to visit this girl!!
So there’s the latest from Monica! Have a wonderful week!

PEACE!

It was… and then it wasn’t… and then it was.

So… I know I should have posted something like… a lot of days ago… but over the last few days I have either been ill or just plain lazy. Round Three in Hong Kong was sooo much cooler than Rounds One and Two!! Know why? Know WHY?! Cause my big brother came to see me!!! YAY!! So here’s how it went…

It was perfect and then it wasn’t and then it was! So September 29th came and I met up with Bro. Jerry Dunwoody from home! It was so nice to see someone from America who doesn’t live here. No offense. He got me Starbucks and we just talked about everything I’ve missed. So thankful to have been able to spend the time with a good Christian friend.

Then… it was time for me to get to the train station. Got there with plenty of time to spare. I got to my seat, which was sadly on the aisle… I wanted the window. I put my stuff up and started to settle in when a man came up to me and asked if I’d switch seats with him so he could sit with his wife. SCORE! He had a window seat!! I was more than happy to oblige. It was in this new seat that I met a guy from Belgium.  He got me coffee and told me about all the places he’s lived and what kind of work he does. It was cool. So that was two free coffees in one day!! It was perfect.

Then I got to the airport. And it was no longer perfect. There’s only two exits where people can come out from their flights. There’s video screens so you can watch them come out and see when your person is coming. There’s screens to tell you which flights are delayed, on time, landing, etc. It also tells you the exit from which that flight will be coming. Nick’s flight was set to come out of exit B. I stood at exit B, saw his flight land and get to the gate. And I waited… and I waited… and I waited. For two hours I waited. I tried to get onto the airport wifi and failed several times. I thought… “What if the screen is wrong and they come out of exit A…?” “Nah, I should stay put.” Wrong choice. Finally, I connect to the wifi, find out that he did, in fact, emerge from exit A, waited for me about as long as I waited for him, thought maybe something went wrong with my train, gave up and went to his hotel in the hopes that I’d get in contact with him some how. Long airport story short, we met at Central Station, hugged and I cried like a big stressed out baby.

Then tomorrow came and it was perfect! We walked and took pictures and goofed off like brothers and sisters do! It was so much fun! We went to the top of the International Commerce Center, a bar called the OZONE, and watched the view as the sun set! Btw… the the world’s highest bar… just sayin. Hong Kong is such a beautiful city! We watched the Symphony of Lights and we went to the beach and we saw a replica of Noah’s Ark and we climbed a hill to see a checkerboard. Yeah that was pretty awesome!! It was so cool to wander around and just find cool stuff to take pictures of. I especially had fun taking pictures of Nick taking pictures of buildings and parks and whatnot. Hehe

Saying goodbye to him… was not perfect. I cried again. Like a lot. I got in a taxi to head back to the hotel where I was staying with Britt and her family, and cried the whole way there. Upon arrival at the hotel, the driver turned to me and said, “Don’t be sad. You still alive!” It was so sweet!!! While still sobbing, I said, “But he’s leaving…” It was not cool…

After that came some fun times with Britt and her family which she already posted about and beautiful detail. So here’s where I shall take my leave for the night. It is midnight nineteen so I should go to bed soon…

Thanks for reading!!

PEACE

P-A-R-T…Y? Because I GOTTA!

Yep. We had a party! Finally had the opportunity to invite our friends and coworkers over for a housewarming party. There was music and laughs and, oh, so much FOOD! Seriously I have the best coworkers ever. Each time we invite them over, they bring all kinds of food and drinks with them! Last night they brought two kinds of juice, fruit, and chips; and ordered two pizzas! How awesome is that?!

We had eleven of our closest friends here and it was awesome! It’s so fun to mix foreigners with locals. The outcome is always entertaining. Our Georgian friend, Reese, took it upon himself to teach people how to Tango… poor Chris was a little confused as to what was happening… 🙂

It’s been so nice for us connect with people here as much as we have. When you move so far away, one of the natural tendencies is to worry about whether you’ll be able to make friends and how long it will take (especially in a wildly different culture). Another factor in that situation is that we are somewhat introverted people. I know in my own life, it’s sometimes difficult for me to make a lot of friends and get close to people. I’m a little bit hesitant… always trying to make sure I can trust a person before I let too much of my strange personality show. But when I do find those people I can trust and relate to, I become rather connected to them. They become a very important part of my life. So I came here wondering how it would go. Would it be just Britt and me, chillin at home all the time with nothing to do? (Two teacher shut-ins who stare at the ceiling night after night and drift slowly into madness…?) Would I be able to make one close friend with whom I could stay in contact? (Frankly, that would have been a huge accomplishment for me and I would have been very proud.) What would it take to become close to people here? (I’m weird… and I know it. I can’t imagine what I must seem like to the people here, with my strange interests and sense of humor…)

And here we are with eleven people in our home and having a BLAST with each of them! What?!

We have been blessed with amazing friends, foreign and Chinese alike. And the best part is that they all get along so well even though they are from entirely different circles. My coworkers are very comfortable with our STL teacher friends. They’re so eager to ask questions and tell their own stories. I love it! It will be a monumental task, emotionally, to say goodbye to everyone. March 15th is coming and I am looking forward to it with both dread and exuberance.

PEACE

You Know You’ve Been Here Too Long When…

Very long sentence coming but bear with me, it has a point.

You know you’ve been somewhere like China too long when you walk into a 7-11, see a lizard, and your immediate response isn’t, “Gag! What is that doing in here?!” but rather, “Aww, he’s cute!” Yeah that just happened to me… It’s a serious problem that should probably be addressed immediately but… it really was a cute little lizard!

It’s weird, some of the things we’re starting to get used to. And when I say “used to” I don’t necessarily mean “tolerant of.” One thing being the stares. People still watch every move we make. On my way to 7-11 this evening, two gentlemen actually stopped talking to watch me walk past… and I’m wearing sweats! Nothing appealing at all. I’m just white, and they clearly are not accustomed to seeing white chicks in their building. We’re getting used to all the pushing and shoving that comes with a trip on the metro. We’re getting used to the smells of trash and sewer and sweaty people. We’re getting used to the squatters, the lack of public manners, and the smog.

On a happier note, we’re getting used to the constantly grey skies. 🙂 We’re getting used to the desire of all our Chinese friends to help us with every little thing that has gone wrong with this apartment and other such things. We’re getting used to the selection of shopping areas, the incredibly cheap price of food, and the overall idea of living here. I know that last one sounds strange, but it seemed for a while that all we wanted was to go home. To say, “Nuts to this,” pack our bags and split. But God has shown Himself to be ever present right when we need Him. Yes, the stress level is like nothing we’ve ever experienced before (and for some, I’m sure it would be relatively low). Yes, it’s been more expensive than we hoped and imagined, but YES, we’ve made it this far and we’ll be just fine to press on! A wise woman told me over and over before this all began, “You can do anything for a year!” (Thank you, mamma!) And it’s true. You can put up with a new culture, a bad job, or a job that leaves you physically depleted at the end of most weeks for one year. We are young! 😉 And we have an ageless, omnipotent God Who knows exactly what we need, exactly when we need it.

And I know He was thinking of us when he impressed upon the heart of some Chinese individual to open a two-story imported goods store just a few metro stops away from us! Dios es bueno!!!! Lemme tell ya. We got Rold Gold pretzel sticks and dipped them in Betty Crockers chocolate frosting! The angels sang to us last night. They didn’t sing at Bubba Gump, but, child, they was singin last night!! We got poptarts and BBQ sauce and Dr. Pepper! We feasted and watched Despicable Me 2 as we did. “It was GLORIOUS!”

And now imma sleepy sleepy sleepy. Gonna relax for the rest of the night and look forward to my Skype dates tomorrow!! Goodnight to all who read this at night! As for the rest of you….

bye.

PEACE!

Ok, China Won That Round… Perhaps…

Have you ever experienced the feeling of complete and total defeat? I have.

Brittany and I, as previously stated, have lived through a bit of a nightmare trying to find an apartment. I’ll not rehash the details obviously, but it was quite a process. Well, as you know, we did find a place. Furnished, two bedrooms, close to the Metro, close to our friends… had to haggle to get the washing machine included and felt pretty accomplished about succeeding, not gonna lie. It is everything we asked for.

Wait, did I say “furnished”? Yes, yes I did… Did the landlady say “furnished”? Yes, yes she did… By “furnished” did she mean “furnished”? No… no she didn’t. To this lady, “furnished” means, “You get a couch and a mattress. I don’t provide the stove, the refrigerator, the dining table or the coffee table that I showed you. I guess [yes… I ‘guess’] that was the previous tenant’s. Buuuuuut…. I’m not going to tell you this until after you’ve signed a contract, and you come to get your keys. Oh and btw, there’s not hot water in the kitchen. Thanks for your money! I’m gonna go now.”

Defeat. What do we do now? The contract is signed. The deposit, first month’s rent and agency commission has been paid. Thankfully, we have a friend who knows where we can get a refrigerator and stove and such fairly cheap. However, this will still cost us about 2,000 RMB, which is money we just don’t have. Like I said: Defeat. It doesn’t feel good.

When I received the news from Brittany, I was at dinner with my coworkers. Do you know what a physically and emotionally exhausted female does when she gets news like that? She cries. Doesn’t matter that there’s eight people sitting around a table watching her in awkward silence. She still cries. However, I have the best coworkers in the whole wide world!! When I told them what happened, they were furious. Janice, the head teacher, came around the table to give me a hug and assure me that they would do everything in their power to help me. I was informed that Cookie, another instructor, is great at complaints and negotiating! 🙂 When Julie told me this, Cookie looked at me with a devious smile, nodded and said, “Trust me.”

So now, let’s focus on the positives. 1) This apartment is awesome! Two bedrooms, cute tile work in the bathroom and kitchen, very modern set-up and decor, new washing machine, a rather spacious living room, and decent view of the beautiful Sofitel Hotel and some other buildings! We will have plenty of room for a table and chairs and having company over!! 2) Location, location, location! We walk a mere three minutes to the Metro station! That Metro station is three stops from Britt’s office, two stops from my office, and one stop from our friends!!

…………………………………………….

Ok, I’m finishing this post a few days late and thankfully so. A lot has happened since I started this one. So our real estate agent felt so bad about hiding all of this from us that he bought a refrigerator for is!! At no charge to us! He is going to keep it or sell it or whatever after we leave. Most costly crisis: averted. Next comes the stove….. we’ve seen them around in the stores for 1200 rmb…. not cool. Good thing I know people who know how to find deals online! 400 rmb later… we will have a stove by Tuesday! Table is still up in the air. Our friend might have one for us but we might have to buy one… not sure yet.

We have a beautiful apartment! It’s been so fun and exhausting to get it all set up like we want and cleaned like we want. They said they cleaned it…. HA. That’s cute that you think this is “clean.” But we’ve purchased a pot and a pan, some kitchen utensils and some water and Vanilla Coke. 🙂 It’s starting to look and feel like a home! We both have mattresses now and have been able to sleep comfortably. 😀

What an AMAZING turn of events!!!! Did you know that prayer works??? If I didn’t fully believe that before, I certainly do now!! Thank you, Lord!

PEACE!

Just a Moment…

So it’s just me tonight. Britt is on a lovely holiday with her school, so I’ve been able to spend the evening alone with my thoughts. Scary stuff, lemme tell ya.

It’s a gorgeous night tonight though. Our bedroom window faces north toward the city, and it’s so clear tonight that you can see the Canton Tower lit up in all its glory. To the west, lightning is dancing across the sky so far away that you can’t hear the thunder. You can, however, hear the beautiful instruments being played down by the lake…. accompanied by unfortunately horrible singing. But in all it’s horribleness, it’s beautiful. They’re just a bunch of people who get together and sing for no one. They’re just having fun singing together for no reason except that they feel like it. It’s pretty cool, and it’s something I’ll miss when we move.

The reason that being left alone with my thoughts is so scary is…. I have no thoughts. No important thoughts anyway. I’m just sitting here. I checked facebook real quick, then stared out the window at the lightning. Total silence in my head. (All the little voices stood me up tonight 😉  Maybe it’s actually a good thing though. Since moving here, our lives have become filled with thoughts and questions and whatever else, that will not shut up! “When and where will we see another apartment?” “What is the theme for the Level 5 class this week?” “I haven’t prepared for class tomorrow… stink.” “Ew… that guy should REALLY put his arm down!!” “That’s an interesting flavor…”

My mind is like this: WORK, WORK, WORK… Apartment….? HOME…. Strange food, no way….. Groceries…. HOME…. WORK… Strange smells…. Pretty lights!

I’m constantly processing SOMETHING! All the time. I try to block it out with reading, listening to music, watching a movie, sleeping… but even then… there’s something going on in my head. But right now… now that I’m alone and I’m still, the thoughts have stopped. I allowed myself to have a moment of silence because it just felt so good to do nothing, and to think nothing. Then because the thoughts stopped, I thought it a good idea to write about my thoughtlessness which brought all the thoughts back. What a weird circle. Maybe I shouldn’t have written anything.

I guess the point is… those thoughts are important… some of the time. They’re things I need to think about and take into consideration for my own well-being. But there should always be some times when I just stop thinking. How does the verse go? “Be still…” Tonight was a good night to be still for a bit.

Sorry this one wasn’t filled with tales of flying Brittanys… just thought I’d share.

Goodnight all.

PEACE
